World Cup Food Culture

World Cup Food Culture

Traveling the world brings a very unique experience no matter where you end up. There is always a commonality with most places and in the culture of traveling that everyone seems to have an understanding about. There is the culture of food and what to eat and where to eat it. Food is perhaps one of the strongest things that brings people together and has a common ground no matter where you end up. Whether you are in the middle of a jungle with a tribe that has been lost for thousands of years or you are going to the city to visit your grandmother the common ground is to share the food. The World Cup has the best of everything when it comes to food because we have the whole world before us and it is a sample platter of the cultures of the world. You would swing by the Netherlands and have some cheese with specialty breads and in the same day you could head over to Spain for some Spanish rice.

This is just one of the many perks of the World Cup that you get to sample the foods from all of the individual vendors that are carrying the special foods of their country. There will be vendors that will be yelling out in their native tongue that they have the best food that their country has to offer and they might be right. Perhaps it would be the most opportune moment to get a grasp of the culture through their food. This would be a wonderful bonding experience at your World Cup that could make memories and friends that could last a lifetime. When people are passionate about their country their passion is usually reflected in the food they cook. At the World Cup it would be safe to say everyone is passionate about their country.

Top Men’s World Cup Players of All Time

Top Men’s World Cup Players of All Time

The World Cup is truly a showcase of the world’s best soccer (football) talent, year after year.  Not only do players make their mark into history but also represent their nation as the best of the best.  With that said, it can be extremely difficult in trying to come up with a list of the best men’s World Cup players of all time.  There were a few players that have stood the test of time though by many as truly fantastic players of their respective eras.

Pele
Pele is one of the few players that even individuals who do not watch or play soccer know about.  Out of a total of 14 World Cup game appearances for Brazil he had 12 goals, a truly remarkable feat.  Also consider that during his first World Cup he was only 17 years of age; he went on to score two goals in the final match and cement his legacy as one of the great World Cup performers in the history of the event.

Gerd Muller
Gerd Muller was literally a goal scoring phenomenon for Germany’s national team.  In 63 appearances for West Germany Muller scored 68 goals, with 10 of them coming in the 1970 World Cup.  Few players can match his goal scoring ability, either in the past or in the present.

Ronaldo
Ronaldo is one of the greatest World Cup players on the modern stage today for the Brazilian national team.  He still holds the record at 15 goals for the most in the final tournament, and led the team to 2 World Cup victories.

Zinedine Zidane
Zidane was one of the best players in Europe throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, and played an integral role in leading the team to a World Cup victory in 1998 and a finals appearance in 2006.  France would not have been the same without him, and his goal scoring is matched only by the aforementioned players.

Top Women’s World Cup Teams of All Time

Top Women’s World Cup Teams of All Time

The women’s World Cup has been in existence since 1991, and at first there were only 12 teams available for the first matches.  However, 20 years later the women’s World Cup is thriving, with national teams from all over the world competing in this great event.  Since 1991 there have been a total of 6 World Cup tournaments played, with Germany and the United States winning two each.  In fact, since the existence of the women’s World Cup the United States has never finished worse than third, which is a remarkable feat considering that women’s soccer talent around the world has improved greatly over the years.  Here are the best women’s World Cup teams of all time.

1999 United States
The United States women’s team in 1999 is conceived by many to be the greatest women’s team to have ever played in the World Cup to this point.  Not only did the team have Michelle Akers and Mia Hamm in the peak of their careers, along with well known players such as Julie Foudy, Kristine Lilly, and Briana Scurry.  Scurry was a fantastic goalkeeper throughout the tournament, and was able to hold on just long enough in the 1999 World Cup Final to allow Brandi Chastain to score the winning penalty kick.

2007 Germany
Both the 2003 and 2007 German teams were great, but the slight edge goes to the 2007 women’s team.  The German national team was completely dominant throughout the entire 2007 World Cup, besting Argentina 11-0 in their first game.  Germany did not give up one goal in its repeat World Cup title, with Nadine Angerer being one of the best goalkeepers in World Cup history.  Great defense combined with solid offense from Martina Muller and Kerstin Stegemann vaulted the team into one of the best to have ever played in a women’s World Cup.

Upcoming Men’s World Cup Locations

Upcoming Men’s World Cup Locations

The World Cup is one of the most highly anticipated events in sporting world, with hundreds of millions tuning into to watch whenever it comes on.  What is great about the World Cup is that nations throughout the world can host the event, making it all the more exciting for that country’s residents.  In 2010 the World Cup was hosted by South Africa, which was a momentous occasion in that country’s history.  The next three World Cup locations truly show how diverse the sport has become on a global scale, starting with the 2014 World Cup.

2014 World Cup
The 2014 World Cup will be held in Brazil from June to July of that year.  For Brazil it is the second time that it has played host to the event, with the other one being in the year 1950.  This should be an exciting time for South Americans, as a World Cup has not been played on the continent since the late 1970s in Argentina.  Originally the bid came down to three countries: Argentina, Columbia, and Brazil.  Argentina was the first to bow out of the race, and Columbia followed soon after it received notice that it would host the 2011 U-20 World Cup instead.

2018 World Cup
The 2018 World Cup will be hosted by Russia from June to July of the same year.  For Russia it is their first time ever hosting the World Cup, and also given the fact that it will be the first World Cup in Eastern Europe makes this a great moment for global soccer and the World Cup as well.  It did not come easy for Russia though, as it had to compete against England, Belgium, and Portugal.  The host nation was decided in the second round as Russia reached the majority of votes needed, and thus 2018 should shape up to be a great year for soccer.

2010 Men’s World Cup Recap

2010 Men’s World Cup Recap

The 2010 men’s World Cup was full of great performances, missed calls, and other interesting news.  It was the first World Cup to ever have been hosted in Africa (South Africa), and the tournament overall was a large success.  It should be remembered by many not only for the great teams that played, but for the unique instrument that was used throughout, known as the vuvuzela.

As far as the results went, Spain defeated the Netherlands 1-0 to win their first ever World Cup, while Germany defeated Uruguay for third place.  In a total of 19 World Cups to this point there have only been 8 teams that have won the coveted trophy, with Brazil having the most at 5 World Cups.  The biggest upsets coming out of the beginning of the tournament involved Italy and France, who could not make it past the first round.  Italy had won the World Cup in 2006 and it was expected that they would be contenders along with France, but it was not to be.

One of the most controversial plays coming out of the 2010 men’s World Cup occurred during the round of 16 when England faced off against Germany.  Frank Lampard hit a shot that clearly crossed the goal line on instant replay but was not ruled as a goal since the officials did not see it go across (FIFA does not use instant replay to check if goals were scored or not).  It did not matter very much as Germany won 4-1, but it did show FIFA that implementing new technology can have a positive effect.

One of the biggest surprises coming out of the 2010 World Cup was that of Ghana, who made it past the round of 16.  Not only that, but the 32nd ranked team had to make it past the 14th ranked United States in order to do so, and won 2-1 to move on.  The team eventually lost to Uruguay on penalty kicks in the quarterfinals, but it was a strong showing by an African nation in the continent’s first hosting.

Not Just a Cup but the World Cup

Not Just a Cup but the World Cup

One of the most recognized sports in the world; in fact perhaps the most recognized sport in the world soccer has a fan base that spans the globe. The World Cups is the Olympics for soccer only. With the fans from almost every country the event finds itself the talk of the year when it is time for the cup to be played. Every four years there is the world cup which is to determine the best team in the entire world, not just within their league. When a country is selected to host the world cup the economic boost is unprecedented with millions and millions of dollars being poured into the local areas and shops from people looking for a place to stay or just getting some souvenirs.

When a country is selected to host the event the entire world seems to flock to the selected location with amazing speed. It has been said that if you are looking for lodging for the cup and you need to rent a room you should try to book about a year in advance. Just that statement alone is proof of the magnitude of the event itself. With the hotels being rented in mere seconds of reports of the event you could imagine that the World Cup is serious business in the tourism industry.

Winning the cup for any country would be world-wide recognition not only for the team that won but the country as a whole.
